How to tell if a memory foam pillow is too high for your neck
Waking up with a stiff neck is a sign your pillow loft is off. Use these checks to verify your alignment.
If your neck feels strained or your chin is pushed toward your chest while lying down, your pillow is too high. A proper pillow keeps your spine in a neutral, straight line from your head to your lower back.
Signs your loft is off
When you lie on your back, your head should rest in a neutral position. If you feel your neck muscles working to hold your head up, or if you find yourself constantly shifting to get comfortable, the loft is fighting your natural posture.
Physical cues for your sleep position
Use these cues to determine if you need a lower or higher profile:
- Back sleeping: Your head should rest in the recessed center to keep the spine level.
- Side sleeping: Your shoulder should fit into the side cutout to prevent neck compression.
- Stomach sleeping: You require the lowest possible loft to prevent neck strain.
